Timeline
"Forsan et haec olim meminisse iuvabit""Perhaps it will be pleasing sometime to have remembered these things", from The Aeneid -- Virgil
- Fall of 1995
- Darkstaff founded the mud
- The original admin were Swashbuckler, Aelfwin, Execution
- Machine Location
- (this is a guess). Dec Alpha at a local isp run by Evil.
- December 1995
- In what turned out to be a bad decision the mud opened to players. Turned out that the mud was not near ready to have players on it. and we shut down sometime in early 1996 to address those problems.
- January/February 1996
- Zifnab becomes an admin
- July 29, 1996
- The mud officially opens for real after being closed for a few months to clean things up. Even at this time the mud was far from finished. Many of the guilds were barely started etc. The mud until just recently continued to adjust to the upper levels of players.
- November 1996
- Marvin becomes an admin
- Fall 1997
- Due to an oversight in the design of the mud, Hung is getting close to the max size for an integer in MudOS (2,100,000,000 + a little). As a quick fix and hope to fend the problem off for a while, Marvin implements a change that will reduce all exp by 90%. This bought us some time until Hierokliff again reached the max integer size.
- Spring 1998
- Mud changes
- Experience for training raised
- Wishes were changed
- Over 100% skill/spell maxes changed.

- September 1999
- Hierokliff nears the max integer size (2,147,483,647). Khosan adds support to the mudlib for us to handle any value of exp, no more worries about overflowing the integer size.
- December 1999
- Incredible string of bad luck with machines/Providers.
- We were being hosted in Los Angeles and the provider decided
that they were no longer going to support web servers. Since we had
the muds web site there we had to move.
Khosan offered to host us. Until we found another solution which we took advantage of. Shortly after the move a router went down at the university over the Christmas holidays so no one could get there to reboot the router. We were down for almost 2 weeks
Darkstaff had DSL installed at his house, and hosted the mud there after Khosan's network came back up. Qwest evidently had his DSL on a development network that went up and down like a yo-yo. Had numerous outages, including one 3 day outage that no one at qwest noticed. (This led to the numerous 'qwest' emotes inside the mud.)
Darkstaff then moved the mud to another location in Qwest hanging off one of the major backbones. This site hosted us for quite awhile.
During this time of complete chaos, we took a backup of the mud and just let the players run wild, free exp, free gold etc.
- We were being hosted in Los Angeles and the provider decided
that they were no longer going to support web servers. Since we had
the muds web site there we had to move.

The mud crashed and some players lost quite a bit of exp they had earned. Since we had no way to verify what they had earned and lost there was nothing we dould do to reimburse that exp. We have since fixed the code (each player saves individually now) and we extended the double exp day 6 hours.

We reduced the muds memory usage from well over 2 GB in less than 24 hours to we now use around 300 MB over a week reboot cycle
- The change mentioned above allowed us to push the reboot time out to 1 week.
