i would like to open a discussion on ways to realistically recruit
new players.
what are our (IOM, a text based RPg) strengths
what are our weaknesses
what are our points of difference


should we look to convert a) WOWers who want to come back
b) other mudders from other muds
c) friends of people who already play
d) people in your school/uni/pc class?
e) board based rpg games.


would it make sense advertising on pinup boards of your local
fantasy book store, RPG store, PC lab?


i find it a shame that we have such a great game and only 30 people
actually use it

what do player reps, players and wizzes think? what are our
objectives and how can we finance them?

While it's a good idea, seeing as how we can't even get people to vote
on the voting sites regularly, I'm not sure how much effort would be
put into getting signs up in various RL places.
Anything's worth a shot, but even on the mud rankings pages you
won't see the level of activity represented in the actual play of this
mud.

i tend to think that it's time better spent if the people who think we need to advertsize more just did it rather than waste the time convincing the people who don't want to expend any effort should change their ways.

maybe you should start exp the newbies too, lame that only 3-4 top 4gig+ are invited to big exp parties.. why do you guys want more players when you dont evn give a shit about them.

i don't think dragging newbies is a good way to get them to play,
personally. while they do indeed get excited cause they're getting
way more exp than usual, they are also more likely to burn out
because it significantly reduces the challenge of getting big. imo,
it makes sense for people to exp with like-sized people, as far as
keeping them entertained by the game.

I think compromise is right here.
To hold your interest, you'll want to be doing something, which you
hardly have too with a bunch of gigbies.
The other side is that if you don't get a nice drag every now and
again, you'll find yourself slowing way the hell down every 8 levels
or so
About the time your skills/spells are fairly high to train/study,
but aren't currently enough to get you to your next spell in a
timely fashion
or something

so, apparently, more newbies would make this game more fun for you
guys? curious to know exactly how 'that' would work =)
I mean.. the exp limitations have already been severely passed over
aeons ago, and the only thing more people could really "help" you
guys with now is eq.. to which I say, if you're really that
desperate for more help, why not try to get some of the oldbies back
playing the game instead? they have the character worth still.
I know someone is going to come up with a snarky-assed response like
"oh but newbies will be better because blablablablablabal", but
honestly, I refer back to my original statement, how is that going
to help YOU have more fun? you can't force a horse to drink water,
and you can't force a person to play an mud and like it.
simply put, it's the mmo-age, get used to it.

well, i'm not against the idea of newbies partying, but i don't
think there's ever a point where a low level character needs to for
any reason party with a gigbie. i'm not saying it can't happen...
hell, a level 4 unraveller can help a necro a little, but i think
that for the most part that any partying should really be contained
to a group where they would be pulling their own weight a bit more,
and not a group where they are essentially useless and just end up
getting dragged.
i'm against drags in entirity, to be honest. if i thought that the
newbies could actually put in as much as they got out of a party
with gigbies, i'd have no issue with it. sadly they'd get a ton of
exp, WAY more than they could solo or get out of a reasonable party,
and again way more than they could add to the party itself.
